The ongoing COVID⁃19 pandemic is a serious threat to human health, and older people with un⁃ derlying diseases are the most vulnerable, especially those with chronic respiratory diseases, showing significantly increased severe illness rates and case fatality rates. Existing epidemiological data show that the underlying diseases and comorbidities are often closely associated with the prognosis of COVID⁃19. Chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, pulmonary tuberculosis, interstitial lung diseases and lung cancer,as well as the underlying status such as smoking, are not only high risk factors for severe and critical COVID⁃19,but also contribute to the significantly increased disease burden. This article aims to briefly review the current status and progress of research on the co⁃morbidity risk and disease burden of chronic respiratory diseases and COVID⁃19.
