Abstract

Objective To investigate the osteogenic differences of the Beagle canine mandible after implantation of the pure titanium implants treated by sandblasting and acid etching. Methods Four Beagle dogs were implanted with the pure titanium implants after sandblasting and acid etching. The Beagle dogs were sacrificed at 2 weeks and 4 weeks after implantation, and the specimens were observed radiologically and histologically. Results All the wounds in the four Beagle dogs were healed in the first stage without implant loosening. Histological and radiological observation showed that new bone formation on the surface of the implant could be observed. Contact and distance osteogenesis were observed. Contact osteogenesis is related to the biological characteristics of different bone regions of the mandible, and the area close to cortical bone has a good effect of contact osteogenesis. Contacting with cortical bone was not obvious in areas larger than 600 μm. Conclusion Contact osteogenesis was observed on the surface of pure titanium implants with acid etching and sandblasting, and contact osteogenesis was related to the biological characteristics of different bone regions of the mandible, and more new bone was generated in the area close to cortical bone.
